A message from Stephanie Meyer to Twilight fans

Stephanie Meyer took to her website to post this message to fans about her Twilight journey and to address the most frequently asked questions regarding the twist in Breaking Dawn part 2.  Warning if you haven’t seen the movie, there are spoilers below:

Hi everyone. I hope you’re all coming back from a really fabulous Thanksgiving weekend, full of quality family time, too much delicious food, and restful tryptophan comas.

Two weeks ago, while doing press for Breaking Dawn 2, there were a lot of questions I wasn’t able to answer because I didn’t want to spoil the ending for anyone. I promised in a couple of interviews that I would post the answer to a specific question on my website once everyone had had a chance to see the movie. Now, if there is anyone reading this who hasn’t had a chance to see BD2 yet and really wants to remain unspoiled, please stop reading now.

***spoilers ahead***

The question, which I got frequently, was how I felt about having a big change inserted into the story during the final climax. My answer was that it didn’t feel like such a huge departure. For me, this moment is already in the book. However, we don’t get to see it in all its exciting and gory detail because we are seeing the world only through Bella’s eyes. A few of the reporters I talked to wanted to know where in the book this moment was hidden. The answer is page 738, fourth paragraph down:

“Aro stared into my eyes for a long, tense moment. I had no idea what he was searching for, or what he found, but after he had measured me for that moment, something in his face changed, a faint shift in the set of his mouth and eyes, and I knew that Aro had made his decision.”

In this short analysis, after Bella has revealed the depth of her power, Aro plays out in his head the probable outcome of a battle with the Cullens. Much like what we see in the movie, Aro foresees a more evenly matched fight than he had expected, the loss of too many of his key players, and—most unacceptable—the likelihood of his own death. Though odds are that the Volturi would have come out on top in the end, Aro wouldn’t have lived to see it and the unassailable nature of the Volturi’s authority would have been broken, possibly forever. It is this vision of the future—though imperfect guesswork on his part—that motivates his retreat.

Melissa Rosenberg and I have both mentioned the fateful dinner we had (back during the filming of Eclipse) where we hashed out a way to make the end of Breaking Dawn more cinematic. This was the idea we latched on to—how do we make this vision of Aro’s into something the viewer can experience? The answer was pretty simple once we looked at it that way—we already had a character who could show us visions. So the only real change to the book ending of Breaking Dawn is that Alice enters the scene earlier, and comes in contact with Aro.

(Are there a few little trespasses against the mythology in this vision? Yes, as some of you have pointed out. The consensus was that a minor deviation from what had been established was forgivable in the name of entertainment. I had a few very elaborate solutions, but they were too confusing and not nearly as cinematic as the final product. And obviously, the result was very entertaining.)

A few reporters asked me if I would have done anything different in the battle if I had written it; the answer is yes. Mainly, I would have killed more Cullens. I do think the Volturi would have won the day; as the talented players were taken out, in the end it would be brute strength that would determine the victor, and the Volturi have more soldiers and more experience. Of course, if we had offed Edward or something, it might have been too obvious that it was a vision sequence. In the end, when the vision was revealed, the reaction I heard in the two unsuspecting audiences I viewed it with was nothing but relief and enthusiasm. Kudos to Bill C for creating the perfect emotional response! He plays our heartstrings like a virtuoso.

It was really something to get to spend a little time with the fans at the BD2 events, and to watch the movie at the premiere with so many of them. It was the best experience I’ve ever had at a Twilight movie, and a perfect conclusion to my personal Twilight experience. I hope you also enjoyed the movie, and each other, for this last big bang. You, the readers and viewers, are the ones who have made this whole ten-year experience into something unbelievable and amazing, and I thank you so much for it. I hope I get to see some of you again in March (shameless The Host plug), because it makes me too sad to think that my relationship with my readers is ending, too.

Happy Holidays to you all, may the season be filled with good friends and good books!

Y'know Stephanie, that last comment of Aro's, before he makes his swift departure, definitely leaves the door open for more Twilight….just sayin'….and hopin'!!!

  • katherine miguel

    plsssss!!!!…….more sequel for twilight!!!….

  • Dixie

That movie was the best one ever. Was such a shock to see my heroes killed off. So glad they weren't really gone though. Please, you have to finish the other book. Or maybe,,,just keep writing about them. Like each one has a different story or it could be about Jacob and Renesmee. Each book could be about each of the other couples.I am not ready to turn these books and movies loose.I don't have another series to look forward to now.

  • soma Das

Going into the movie I knew there was going to be a “twist” that deviated from the movie a bit and I thought I had figured out what it was going to be from watching the previews. When I saw the battle scene I was shocked, terrified and really upset when all the Cullens started dying! But once the vision was over I (and the rest of the audience in the theater) laughed, shouted for joy and started clapping with excitement and relief that it was just a vision and our favorite Cullens were still in tact! It was really a great twist…because reading the second half of the book before I saw the movie again…I realized how disappointed I was that we didn't get to see a battle or to see Bella more in action because I was convinced she could protect everyone and they could win. So it was nice to be able to see how it would play out in the movie. :) I really hope they make another one about Jacob and Renesme!

I loved the way this film was done, with very few exceptions! Everyone can nitpick but at the end of the day we all know that a book isn't going to be exactly the same as the film. I have to say, the battle went above and beyond my hopes (as I remember you saying that you wish you had written the fight scene in NM for the book) but watching that scene, from the second it started, I sat in shock, horror, tears, exasperation, and satisfaction! it was absolutely perfect! I have seen it 5 times now and still cry even knowing its just a vision. Seeing the characters you love be destroyed is incredibly emotional! I just wanted to thank you for your beautiful books. I know so many people tell you this, but I have made more friends over this book than anything else in my life. :) I am so looking forward to the Host! xxxx

  • Angelbubble

I lost it in the theater watching Seth die. I actually stood up to leave. but just couldn't follow through.

  • Sariah F.

thanks for answering the questions and for writing such awesome books. I am totally looking forward to seeing The Host in March. It opens the day before my birthday so I am looking at is as a birthday bonus for me. ;o) I loved the book though I have to admit I was very conflicted about it while reading it. Your ability to capture my mind leaves me helpless to the world around me as I no longer pay attention to little things like reading all night and having to go to work on little to no sleep. I am a huge fan and am looking forward to your next book. Hope you have a Merry Christmas! God bless.

  • debbie

I had a nervous break down when i saw carlisle cullen die…..and then the rest…..seriously i was in the cinema all crying and i couldn't catch my breath…..my friend got so worried for me……and even after the movie, the memory of this fight still makes my eye wet….!!!! but hey, this is what is expected from movies – to make impression……i have read the book many many times and i enjoyed being surprised :) thank you for all the books and movies…..i will keep watching and reading them….thank you!!!!

Thanks so much Stephenie! I knew that but people just didn't believe me… You and Melissa did marvelously well and we, the faithful (fans), thank you with all our hearts!!!

  • JoKienle

I have enjoyed this journey so much, I have seen BD2 3 times now because I don't want it to come to an end. I love the story between Edward and Bella so much, it is now my most favorite go to movie when I need to relax, or need a good love story. I love it and it will be a big part of me forever.
One more thing, I agree with Kelly, please finish Midnight Sun, would love to hear Edwards story!! Love Edward!!

  • lisa

Yes please finish midnight sun. I don't think anyone wants to get rid of twilight and it was so cool to relive twilight through edward
And kudo's to Bill, amazing job on the movie. By far my fave.

  • oregonblossom

After you have seen the movie once, the spell is broken forever. You can't be surprised more than once. The “surprise” was done for shock only and I think a cheap shot. The rest of the movies stayed pretty much on track with the books except for BD2. No way did that 4th paragraph insinuate all that was put into the movie. Just write Stephenie – don't produce. Forgivable – maybe not.

  • Jamie Carroll

Please finish midnight sun, it does not have to be any time soon as long as i get to read it someday, I read Twilight when it first came out and i have been to every book and movie premier, i have also read all of your other works but nothing has had such an effect as twilight and being able to know all the effects little things you mentioned in twilight have on Edward (such as the bottle cap being put on the piano before he could write bella's lullaby) made the world to me and most likely all your other fans as well. Even if you do not finish midnight sun i would like to thank you for creating this amazing series which have completly changed my life, from me and all of your fans Thank you!!!!!

You are my inspiration and I do not know how to thank you. But I want you to know that you and the characters in your books have a very big part of my life. Thank you thank you thank you!

While the vision that everyone thought it was real, I want to tell you that it was really shocking! I was – I was so surprised that I could not cry. I knew something was wrong because you'd never let them die. So certainly felt relieved at the end!
