A message from Stephanie Meyer to Twilight fans

Stephanie Meyer took to her website to post this message to fans about her Twilight journey and to address the most frequently asked questions regarding the twist in Breaking Dawn part 2.  Warning if you haven’t seen the movie, there are spoilers below:

Hi everyone. I hope you’re all coming back from a really fabulous Thanksgiving weekend, full of quality family time, too much delicious food, and restful tryptophan comas.

Two weeks ago, while doing press for Breaking Dawn 2, there were a lot of questions I wasn’t able to answer because I didn’t want to spoil the ending for anyone. I promised in a couple of interviews that I would post the answer to a specific question on my website once everyone had had a chance to see the movie. Now, if there is anyone reading this who hasn’t had a chance to see BD2 yet and really wants to remain unspoiled, please stop reading now.

***spoilers ahead***

The question, which I got frequently, was how I felt about having a big change inserted into the story during the final climax. My answer was that it didn’t feel like such a huge departure. For me, this moment is already in the book. However, we don’t get to see it in all its exciting and gory detail because we are seeing the world only through Bella’s eyes. A few of the reporters I talked to wanted to know where in the book this moment was hidden. The answer is page 738, fourth paragraph down:

“Aro stared into my eyes for a long, tense moment. I had no idea what he was searching for, or what he found, but after he had measured me for that moment, something in his face changed, a faint shift in the set of his mouth and eyes, and I knew that Aro had made his decision.”

In this short analysis, after Bella has revealed the depth of her power, Aro plays out in his head the probable outcome of a battle with the Cullens. Much like what we see in the movie, Aro foresees a more evenly matched fight than he had expected, the loss of too many of his key players, and—most unacceptable—the likelihood of his own death. Though odds are that the Volturi would have come out on top in the end, Aro wouldn’t have lived to see it and the unassailable nature of the Volturi’s authority would have been broken, possibly forever. It is this vision of the future—though imperfect guesswork on his part—that motivates his retreat.

Melissa Rosenberg and I have both mentioned the fateful dinner we had (back during the filming of Eclipse) where we hashed out a way to make the end of Breaking Dawn more cinematic. This was the idea we latched on to—how do we make this vision of Aro’s into something the viewer can experience? The answer was pretty simple once we looked at it that way—we already had a character who could show us visions. So the only real change to the book ending of Breaking Dawn is that Alice enters the scene earlier, and comes in contact with Aro.

(Are there a few little trespasses against the mythology in this vision? Yes, as some of you have pointed out. The consensus was that a minor deviation from what had been established was forgivable in the name of entertainment. I had a few very elaborate solutions, but they were too confusing and not nearly as cinematic as the final product. And obviously, the result was very entertaining.)

A few reporters asked me if I would have done anything different in the battle if I had written it; the answer is yes. Mainly, I would have killed more Cullens. I do think the Volturi would have won the day; as the talented players were taken out, in the end it would be brute strength that would determine the victor, and the Volturi have more soldiers and more experience. Of course, if we had offed Edward or something, it might have been too obvious that it was a vision sequence. In the end, when the vision was revealed, the reaction I heard in the two unsuspecting audiences I viewed it with was nothing but relief and enthusiasm. Kudos to Bill C for creating the perfect emotional response! He plays our heartstrings like a virtuoso.

It was really something to get to spend a little time with the fans at the BD2 events, and to watch the movie at the premiere with so many of them. It was the best experience I’ve ever had at a Twilight movie, and a perfect conclusion to my personal Twilight experience. I hope you also enjoyed the movie, and each other, for this last big bang. You, the readers and viewers, are the ones who have made this whole ten-year experience into something unbelievable and amazing, and I thank you so much for it. I hope I get to see some of you again in March (shameless The Host plug), because it makes me too sad to think that my relationship with my readers is ending, too.

Happy Holidays to you all, may the season be filled with good friends and good books!

Love,
Steph

Did anyone elses heart break/melt when Marcus said “Finally!” right before he was killed, that one line killed me! Great movie. Though I didn't like all the CGI in the begining…seemed super duper fake to me but I will definitely watch it again!

Thank you Stephanie Meyer for writing the twilight books.

  • karolynn

Why dont u make another twilight movie

  • Laura

there are no more books to make a movie out of…there are only 4 books….or were you saying make a remake of Twilight? It would be a bit too soon to do that. Movies are usually remade after a good amount of years have gone by.

  • Jen

I loved the movie and thought it ended well. It is very sad that the end is here but at least I get to read or see the movies over and over. I do feel a loss which may seem weird!! These characters were apart of my life for so long….can't wait to read and see more of your movies Stephanie. Thank you for your creative mind :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/sissi.perez.37 Sissi Perez

Stephenie, thanks for such a beautiful love story. If you have any free time please finish Midnight Sun. Don't let someone's wrongdoing stop you from giving your fans the wonderful experience of their love story from Edward's perspective. It was amazing to finally know what he does when he is not with Bella but overall it was wonderful to know how the family passed their time and their feelings and thoughts because Edward knows what everyone is thinking. I can say that I read it more than five times already and I hope that you can overcome how bad you felt when it happened and give your heart and hands a chance to dazzle us again.

Just want to thank you for the most amazing and incredible love story. I cant wait to read your next series of books.

  • Dina Rosenhaus

Stephanie Meyer you are amazing. I am a huge fan of the books (esp, Midnight Sun! I always read that before Twilight when I read the whole series again before each movie comes out) BD2 was great, during the fight scene when Carlisle died my mouth was hanging open for I don't know how long and then Jasper and Seth and Leah, trying to help Esme!! I was screaming in my head “I am going to kill this movie, how could they do this!!!” And then Alice, thank God it was a vision, and I was like, that was amazing!! My heart was beating out of my chest!! I am a 42 year old Mom and I hope you will be writing more books soon <3
If you ever want to talk about the books or movies call me ;)

  • Mandak

I would live to see midnight sun published, as well as the other books from Edwards POV so many times I wonder what is Edward thinking…

  • Connie Bon

A book about rJacob and Renesmae then continue on with another story I am such a Twihard as the mom of 12 kids I have so enjoyed it. But I will follow your writings as always. But it just can't be over. They were so fun, such a fun romantic love story…

  • kime1975

Stephanie, Why was Jacob's mother's coffin nailed shut? How did Billy end up in a wheel chair? Thank you for a good read. All good things have to come to an end, Perhaps, someday you will write more about these much loved charactors.

    then write more books!!!!

  • JennyWren89

Perfect ending for a set up of a new Twilight series… If vampires can now create half immortals, what's to stop the Volturi from creating their own special army? And finishing off the good vamps – the ones who ran and are in hiding?

  • sam

Ur a young writer… you have your whole life ahead of you… so why not continue the story with renesmee and Jacob … fans everywhere would be happy and there are so many ways you can make their story go on from BD2.

  • lacucusa824

I totally LOVE The Twilight Saga…the books…the movies. The ending of this movie is bittersweet being that we all know Twilight has ended. I am in agreement with everyone about Midnight Sun…what can be more amazing than to relive the words…the feelings…the thoughts all through Edwards perspective….would be fantastic and special to all your fans!!!

  • Andy

THANKS FOR five amazing years…… I hope see moré of your great talent in the future….

  • Candice

Yes, please finish Midnight Sun. I loved reading Edward version of this epic love story! I keep re-reading it waiting for the next part to come!

  • michellej

Thank you Stephanie for such a wonderful Story line. i'm not much of a reader but loved the Twilight Saga! i hope you follow up with more about the Twilight characters.

  • Jeanette S

I must admit when I saw the movie the first time I almost walked out when Carlisle and Jasper got killed. But I knew one of my top favorite authors would never ruin one of my favorite book series. And I am glad I stayed! It was amazing!!! thank you Steph <3

  • Katie

    Stephanie

Please continue this series, You did a small book on Bree tanner couldn't your talents with twilight continue. I am a twihard that has been with you since your first book and collected ever since, I am madly in love with your work and what you did for so many people with twilight, you created everything every one of us have or wanted to experience, We have all had a Edward and Bella relationship.

My biggest question Stephanie is Will this forever be the end of twilight? Or will you surprise us with anything else like what happens with Jake and Nessie?

    Love your Work!

  • Sharon Passno,

I'm a 60 yr old woman an I just love your books. one of the best love stories I've ever read, just hate to see it end.. I do have the movies an will get BD2 when it comes out.. thank you so much for many wonderful hours of reading an watching the movies. A very Merry Christmas and a very Blessed New Year..

  • Jada

You done such a wonderful job with Twilight it is my favorite all time best. May you and your family have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I don't know that you could do another as good as Twilight Saga but bring on more stories I love to read and you have my vote.

  • Jonnel Jay

I haven't read the leaked MIDNIGHT SUN yet but I'm looking forward to it. Please finish the story my dear Steph. We would love to read the TWILIGHT SAGA from Edward's perspective. It would be great!
Continue writing my dear. I hope you'll consider writing the story of Jacob and Nessy. And please this time, all the Volturi, including the guards, will cry to death. :)
It's not yet the end of the Twilight journey, right? It's not yet the Happily Ever After for them coz the Volturi is planning to come back and conquer the Cullens. There are still many scenes to add. :)

  • guadalupe villamil

you are a great writter, love the twilight saga!!!! more of those please!!

  • Christa

I cried twice….that's how much it moved me. It took ahold of me and I felt the character's emotions. It was the best one by far!

  • Twihard in Minot

I absolutely loved the twist in the movie! I do wish that you would expand on the Twilight series. It would be interesting to know how the relationship between Vampire Bella and both of her parents evolves and if they ever do find out the truth. How does Renesmee's life with Jacob go? Do the Volturi ever try to go against the Volturi again? And about the Midnight Sun book(s), please reconsider not writing that series. I think it would be fascinating to read it from Edward's point of view.

Thank you for writing such an amazing series.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=770154030 Janelle Koehler

The fight scene made me and my friend want to walk out of the theater! We thought you had ruined the movie.. I think we felt about 50 different emotions in a 2 minute time span!!! But so glad you did it the way you did.. because it was an amazing roller coaster ride and really ended on a GREAT note.. and we think you left it open for another movie if ever considered… so we hope you eventually plan to continue the story, maybe through another character's eyes? :)

  • heather hendrickson

It doesn't have to end. Finish midnight sun!!!!!

  • Sereph-Lyn VanHale

PLEASE FINISH MIDNIGHT SUN MS MEYER!!! I LOVE Twilight!!! I want to love midnight sun more!!! Edward is SOOO complex its amazing!!!

  • Ezzie

Thank you Stephenie for writing the twilight series…i love twilight!!!! I really wish this wasn't the end of twilight. But thank you for letting us have this experience.

  • Tina

I have loved this series from the very beginning and am so sad it has ended. I admit I am a little disappointed that given the ability of two separate movies for BD this last one was so short. There was so much opportunity for more of your story to be placed in the movie. I truly hope in the future this story line can continue. I am looking forward to seeing the host in theaters and can't wait to see what you have in store for the us in the future. A fan for life :-)

  • michelle CW

It was Awesome !!!! Well done !!
Now…get into another trilogy with Renesme and the
Native boy like her and JAcob….there could be another Love triangle
there and a LOT more story…their story and what its like to
be them…half human half Vamp. and Jacob… :)
    Michelle
and do Midnight sun also…. :)

One thing for sure I'm a true Twi-Hard fan and I ask you to please, please finished writing Midnight Sun. I want to know Edwards point of view. Especially when Jacob and Edward are in the tent
I could go on and on give alot of my favorites and I whould never finished. Thank you Stephenie for your amazing talent. Hopefully you will surprise your fans with Midnight Sun and wishing is four books and wishing is out by winter of 2013. :)

  • VamGirl69

Midnight Sun should be finished; it is a real shame because of some *%^&*& person out there we all suffer. BD2 was incredible! I saw it w/one of my good friends who introduced me to the books. We saw the first movie together and everyone after. We had a drink to toast the end before the movie; it was a long wonderful journey and I shed some tears because this was the final movie. The fight scene took everyone by surprise; I remember looking over at my friend going “what just happened?” The ending was perfect!! It was very touching to see Alice and Edward exchange such a loving look and it was even more perfect to see Renesme and Jacob so happy together. Job well done!!!!!!!

  • angelshanin2002

I just wanted to thank you for your books and movies. I started watching the movies, got to the end of new moon and didn't want to wait so i bought the books. (btw my now 15 year old talked me into twilight when it was on paper view) My daughter who had refused for years to read saw how many times i re-read the books and how my point of view on the characters was so different from hers so she started to read them. Now she has read them several times as well and she read books from other movies before she sees them. So thank you for getting my daughter to read. Also I love The Host as well.
